Welcome to AeroEspacial, a second limited series from the creators of AirSpace! Published in both English and Spanish, this four-part series presents stories of Latino history and culture at the heart of aviation and space. Each episode features interviews that spotlight Latino voices and introduce listeners to the diversity of people working in and around aerospace. Topics include:

  • Episode 1 (July 13): Pedro Pan

AeroEspacial: The Second Star to the Right | La segunda estrella a la derecha

In the early 1960s, thousands of unaccompanied children fled Cuba by plane, moving to the United States on  visa waivers from the U.S. government.

Son los principios de la década de 1960 en Cuba, miles de niños sin acompañante huyeron de Cuba en avión, mudándose a los Estados Unidos con exenciones de visa del Gobierno de los Estados Unidos.

Héctor Alejandro Arzate is a first generation Mexican-American who was raised in Richmond, California. He studied criminology at Humboldt State University. He got his start in journalism at his school's bilingual newspaper, El Leñador, before joining the student radio station, KRFH 105.1. 

Currently, Héctor is the Immigrant Communities reporter for DCist.com and WAMU 88.5, the local NPR station in Washington D.C. His favorite part of the job is that he gets to drive dozens of miles between D.C., Maryland, and Virginia to report and produce stories for immigrant communities that intersect with food, religion, health, politics, and the arts. When Héctor is not working, he enjoys flying-fishing, cumbia, magical realism, and cheese.

Héctor Alejandro Arzate es un mexicano estadounidense de primera generación que se crio en Richmond, California. Estudió Criminología en la Universidad Estatal Humboldt. Se inició en el periodismo en el periódico bilingüe de su escuela, El Leñador, antes de unirse a la estación de radio estudiantil, KRFH 105.1. 

Actualmente, Héctor es el corresponsal de las comunidades de inmigrantes para DCist.com y WAMU 88.5, la estación NPR local de Washington D. C. Su parte favorita del trabajo es que puede conducir miles de millas entre D.C., Maryland y Virginia para informar y producir historias para las comunidades de inmigrantes que intersectan con la comida, la religión, la salud, la política y las artes. Cuando Héctor no trabaja, disfruta de la pesca con mosca, la cumbia, el realismo mágico y el queso.

Sofia A. Soto Sugar was raised in Boca Raton, Florida, having moved there from Caracas, Venezuela. She earned a B.A. in Global Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a focus on International Politics and Social Movements in Latin America. She is particularly interested in historic and present overlap of social justice in the U.S. South and South America, as well as the sociopolitical significance of pop culture.

Working as a public programs specialist at the National Air and Space Museum since 2020, Sofia is passionate about making learning and education approachable, relevant, and entertaining. When she’s not working, Sofia enjoys reading, cooking, and walking around her neighborhood.

Sofia A. Soto Sugar se crio en Boca Ratón, Florida, y es originaria de Caracas, Venezuela. Obtuvo un título en Estudios Internacionales de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill, con especialización en Política Internacional y Movimientos Sociales en América Latina. Está interesada en particular en el solapamiento pasado y presente de la justicia social en el sur de los Estados Unidos y en América del Sur, así como en la importancia sociopolítica de la cultura popular.

Sofia, que trabaja como especialista en programas públicos en el Museo Nacional de Aire y el Espacio desde 2020, es una apasionada de hacer que el aprendizaje y la educación sean accesibles, apropiados y entretenidos. Cuando no trabaja, Sofía disfruta de leer, cocinar y caminar por su vecindario.
